(B) THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY PLANS

Last week (Saturday, Oct 3, 2009) the committee met at Liz Adoyo's residence. One of the issues discussed was how we can all meet for Thanksgiving. We acknowledge that most of us may not have invites for Thanksgiving and it being an auspicious occasional, we'd all like to mark it as a Kenyan community -- no one should feel left out. So,

1. WHEN: we plan to host this event on the Thanksgiving FRIDAY (Nov 27, 2009) so that Thursday can be left out for families/friends to have their own events.

2. VENUE: Tentatively, we plan to host it at one of the community centers/halls at the University of Utah village (married student housing). ...it's more central to all and it's free if coordinated by one of us who resides there.

3. ROLES: Everyone's active participation is needed. The Reps (Kim, Peter & Eric) and Director of operations (Kobia), will be in touch with you for further details. People will be asked to prepare specific meals or other items BUT AKU will foot the costs. Stay tuned for details from the Reps and Dir of Ops.

4. COST:
(a) The event will be FREE for duly paid up members/AKU- friends ($50 per year). However, AKU's kitty is still very slim so we ask that if you've not paid up your 2009/2010 annual membership fees, please, do so via the details above as soon as you can -- anza hata kidogo kidogo kitambo tufike Nov 15th utakuwa umeitoboa... Kumbuka haba na haba hujaza kibaba!

(b) For those who shall have not paid up membership fees by Nov 15th, we still need you ALL...so you'll still have an option of paying an admission fee of $10 in order to attend the event. This amount should be paid via bank details above and the Treasurer notified to validate and reconcile payments.

(C) AKU CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS

The committee officially adopted the recently drafted (and circulated to you for review) constitution and by-laws. Please, visit AKU yahoogroup page and check for the folder (under FILES) for these documents. It's IMPORTANT that we ALL know what governs us..and keep on top of things. This is still open for any amendments as and when deemed necessary. Your voice is vital.

Remember, AKU needs your support in order to plan and execute various activities for you.
Should you have any questions, concerns and/or suggestions, please, contact the committee members below. Asanteni sana na mbarikiwe nyote! Please, be visiting AKU's website (yahoogroup and/or facebook) for updates.

Sincerely
Dr. Chris Olola

AKU's 1st (inaugural) social event July 25, 2009!

It was a wonderful AKU social event that enjoyed a superb turnout! Hats go off for the Eringos' (Wambui & Kobia) for their unparalleled organization and hosting skills -- Wambui, the group will definitely miss you...fare thee well! Similarly, AKU's interim officials would like to extend MUCH gratitude to ALL AKU members (and their families and friends) for their turnout, time & material contributions that enabled the event to attain such exemplary success -- the mouth watering nyama choma, kachumbari, rice, chapos, mandaos and a plethora of drinks (just to mention a few), went beyond expectations! THANK YOU ALL!

We welcome all the newly selected AKU-area reps for the various Utah regions -- you'll be very valuable in linking AKU to all Kenyans (and their families) in Utah -- both currently in Utah and those new (future) Kenyans who will come to Utah. All members should keep eyes peeled and alert the officials & reps as the identify/meet Kenyans around Utah. With the reps on board, we'll now engross ourselves in drafting and circulating the AKU's by-laws for your review and implementation thereafter.

We love you ALL! Stay tuned as more events will soon be on. Don't forget to visits with AKU's treasurer (Priscilla) and start remitting your annual membership fee. This is your association, build it and move it to the net level!

Please, see AKU's yahoo group for details on more snaps at the fete, visit AKU's yahoo groups (http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/aku-09/)...under PHOTOS link and facebook, to witness for yourselves! Email me any other different snaps that you may have taken at the event which you may wish to share with others and I'll upload too.

God bless.

AKU's Major Social Event at the Eringo's (3480 W 5620 S, SLC, UT)

Hello all,
First of all, thanks a lot to Chris for the tremendous effort he has put in in streamlining communication for our group.

As announced earlier, all Kenyans are invited for an AKU get together at my place on Saturday, July 25th. Please set the date aside. While I haven't inquired around for the most appropriate time, I believe we will be meeting at around 4pm. I will pass on more information as we make further arrangements for our meeting.

I hope to see you all on the 25th. Please pass the message to our fellow Kenyans and remind them to sign up to our Yahoo! Group and on Facebook.

Always,
Kobia.

H.E Ambassador N.R.O Ogego visits Utah (Salt Lake City)

For the first time since taking office as the Kenyan Ambassador in US, H.E. The Amb N.R.O Ogego, reached out to Kenyans in Utah, on June 05, 2009! Despite the many events he had scheduled for him in Salt Lake City, the ambassador squeezed in some evening (7pm - 9pm) to meet Kenyans in Utah. Seen here on the right is the Ambassador, the Utah Mayor and some of the hosting team's members.

Herein below, is a group of Kenyans who found time from their complex schedules (work, study, domestic commitments, and some barred by distance etc) to attend the Friday evening meeting -- it is estimated that there are close to 100 Kenyans in Utah. It was a town-hall meeting -- numerous questions were fired at H.E and very cogent responses were received in return from the Ambassador. Kenyans in Utah have never felt so satisfied, encouraged and energized to be together and to never loose site of their objectives which brought them to the US. The Kenyans in attendance were indeed convinced by the Ambassador's emphasis on his commitment to serving Kenyans -- he confirmed that he is in the US to serve ALL Kenyans. The attendees also commended H.E (via personal testimonies) for the much improved services at the Washington DC's Kenyan Embassy's Office -- services are efficient, especially passport renewals (including service to the International world) -- we were very impressed. We assured the Ambassador that the newly created Association of Kenyans in Utah (AKU) strives to unite ALL Kenyans and their families and that interactions with and participation in the Embassy's events/activities will be enhanced through AKU.

Thank you your Excellency, for paying us a visit, come again and again! Make this visit just the beginning of the start. We look forward to seeing you more. Your updates on past and current events in Kenya, investment tips etc were very beneficial in keeping us on the loop.

God bless.
